Time Frame It depends upon the time at which the visit to Dachau took place. My old college professor had visited Dachau in 1935-6 as a part of a US State Department sanctoined tour. According to his eye-witness account it seemed not much different than a normal labor-prison, and less odious than some "chain-gang" institutions in the American South. Please recall that in 1935-6 the inmates of Dachau were limited in scope and nature. They were "political prisoners, habitual criminals, mental and/or sexual degerates" and such. The image that most people have is that of the hell-incarnate whch was from 1943-45.
